The Drowning Waves is the uncompromising alternative rock project of longtime friends Rick Koudijs and Jos Dortmans. After over two decades of playing in various bands, the drummer-guitarist duo chose full creative independence in 2020, transforming their home studios in Nijmegen and Uden, the Netherlands, into sonic laboratories for honest and emotionally driven music. Since the release of their debut single Brilliant Wave in late 2022, the band has delivered a string of raw and resonant tracks that blend the introspective edge of indie rock with the intensity of alternative and post-grunge. Their music delves into personal struggle, mental health, fractured identities, and lost innocence—expressed through sweeping dynamics, gritty textures, and urgent vocals. Songs like Some of Us, inspired by the haunting true story of “The Children of Ruinerwold”, and Grieve, a visceral reflection on family and mortality, showcase the band’s commitment to confronting difficult truths.
