Sirocco is a 10-piece Rotterdam-based ensemble that draws its musical inspiration from a diverse range of styles and traditions worldwide, with a focus on Afrobeat, Funk and Jazz. Sirocco was established in late 2022 by composer Ko Kunst and tenor saxophone player Max van Houtum. It features a distinctive lineup, comprising four horns, a five-man rhythm section, and Kunst as it’s frontman - at its core, Sirocco's mission is to bring people together, combining danceable energetic rhythms to engage the body and the emotional depth of the Jazz paradigm to engage the ear and mind. The ensemble has been active in the Rotterdam area, hosting a series of concerts to engage and entertain local audiences, and independently released their debut album on November 16th - the compositions on this record draw inspiration from afrobeat and funk grooves, afrocuban music, reggae & dub aesthetics and balkan rhythms.
