‘Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci meets Randy Newman’ – Vic Galloway, BBC Gurry Wurry is the solo project of Scottish indie-psych-pop dabbler Dave King. His homemade debut received acclaim from the likes of Snack Magazine and Is This Music, and was championed by the BBC’s Roddy Hart and Vic Galloway – grabbing a place on Vic’s 2023 Albums of The Year. The follow-up is set for release in 2024. Recorded with indie royalty Rod Jones (Idlewild, Hamish Hawk, Redolent), the vibe sits in a half-dreamt world where a California breeze blows through the streets of Leith. A world where Randy Newman digs The Beta Band. Where Steely Dan go lo-fi. Where Kraftwerk are forced to share a practice room with John Martyn and Thelonious Monk. It’s as eclectic as you’d expect from a guy who’s been collecting records for the last 25 years. A sort of warm, woozy, anaesthetic pop for times of trouble. An alternative medicine. 2024 looks set to be a lively year for Gurry Wurry with new music, videos and gigs – including a sold out show with Kapil Seshasayee, a set at Leith’s alternative Record Store Day party alongside Eyes of Others, and a support slot with Philidelphia favourites and Kurt Vile tourmates Florry (Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh – 27th May).
