Fletcher Gull is on an endless pursuit of finding sense in chaos; what stands behind the noise. Imagine trying to sift through a junkyard to find your lost wedding ring: it’s with that same determination that the Australian singer-songwriter mines for truth in his music – searching for something special against insurmountable odds. The last year has seen Fletcher Gull come to the fore, as his gift for crafting meandering, indie-inflected tunes has left a lasting impression. His debut single “Hypothermia” gained traction when it was picked up by Triple J Unearthed - one thing led to another, and within a year, Fletcher was commanding the packed-out Bigsound Festival. It worked up an appetite, so when Fletcher dropped his debut EP “Remember That You’re Gone”, the lead single, “Deciduo” had international reach, falling on the ears of Clash Magazine who were enamoured with the way Fletcher captured a sensation of wanderlust in his music. Fletcher’s finely-spun sound is rich in not only texture, but storytelling. His lyrics are rabbit holes – an invitation to let yourself tumble. It will come as no surprise, then, to know that one of his early songs also won 2018’s International Song Writing Competition in the Folk category, having fixed deeply in the mind of Tom Waits who was on the judging panel. “Words are an amazing playground. They just hit me right to the core”, he says. “Not all words, but the right ones.” His love of language, and searching for those right words, extends to his passion for literature which has trickled down into his lyricism. Fletcher’s rhythms ramble like the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, and his themes venture into a reverence for nature and ancient rites like Tolkien. He found his name, Fletcher Gull, between the covers of Richard Bach’s novella “Jonathan Livingston Seagull”, his favourite book. It tells a story of a pursuit of self-perfection, littered with realisations about life and matters of the heart that are manifest in Fletcher’s music. His path as a musician felt almost inevitable. Raised in a musical household, it was his father who would teach him how to play the piano, drums and guitar when he was 8 years old. Raised on a diet of Motown, from Stevie Wonder to The Temptations, Fletcher’s flair for music became apparent when he’d use his piano lessons trying to play the songs he’d heard, and then teach them back to his teacher. As he grew up, it was his love of Bob Dylan that made Fletcher favour depth and introspection over a band dynamic. “Every time I heard him sing, it had this inexorable weight to it that you can’t help either being crushed under or finding yourself trying to lift yourself up with the burden of it. That’s what I love about music,” he shares. “When it hits you like a tonne of bricks, and really changes your whole reality.” Fletcher Gull’s new single “Transgressive Soliloquy” is a blend of shimmering metallic percussion, melodic indie and quirky samples, ‘Transgressive Soliloquy’ sees Fletcher Gull vent his frustration towards 21st Century living. Accompanying the track is a striking one-take video that sees him forcibly dressed and smothered in red paint and black marker pen, acting as a visual metaphor conveying the remorseless effects of societal expectations. About his new track Fletcher says: “In the modern world we live closer to each other than ever, but our worlds have never been further apart. The news outlets in our feed and the friends on our Facebook define the reality in which we live. We surround ourselves with people and stories that reinforce our narrow worldview, insulated in the cosy walls of our tribe. To go out on our own and endeavour to map our own path to the truth has become a tightrope walk over a pit of knives. Even if we don't fall, we might be cast out for our transgressions and we will be naked in the world, an outsider to everyone. It's a world where the wilfully blind throw stones and honest people get caught in the crossfire. This song is for people walking that tightrope; don't lose hope, it will lead somewhere.”
