CMON CMON’s glorious new EP, Headwind, began with a message from out of the blue. The Belgian band had been writing songs for their second album, the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed The Crack and The Light, when an unexpected offer altered their plans. The British producer James Brown had heard CMON CMON on Spotify and fallen instantly for them. “James messaged say he’d been driving in London and had to pull over because he loved our sound so much,” recalls frontman Jorrit. “He mentioned some of the bands he’d worked with - Suede and Razorlight - and invited us to London to record with him.” It wasn’t until the trio arrived at James’ studio on the world-famous Portobello Road that they realised the scale of the invitation. “It was the swankiest place we’d ever seen,” says Jorrit of the studio whose recent clients include Olivia Rodrigo, Stormzy, Skrillex, Sigrid and Burna Boy. “Totally not our usual environment.” Typically of the band who formed for fun five years ago in their 40s and were shocked when their songs caught on across Europe and at college radio in the States, they grabbed the opportunity and left London a fortnight later with the four- track Headwind completed. “James suggested we do an EP and of the ten demos we recorded, we chose these four songs because they sum up where we are now,” says Jorrit. “The core of CMON CMON hasn’t changed, but we learnt some new moves in London.” The EP arrives in March and 2025 will see more music released and CMON CMON back on the road in Belgium and abroad following their successful debut tour last year. The band once vowed to never play live, but circumstances change. In the curious world of CMON CMON, jigsaw pieces seem to simply fall into place. The joy of what has already grown so much bigger than the band ever imagined is stamped through the new songs. “The way we play together is so special,” says Steven. “The chemistry and the energy. We don’t look to other artists. The secret is the three of us – it’s honest, effortless and we always get the best results.”
