Anna Rune, daughter to a flutist and viola player that toured the world, grows up in a classical nest. During her final classical competition as a concert pianist, she realises her passion lies in composing and performing her own music. After starting a jazz education at the royal arts academy in Ghent (BE), graduating cum maxima laude at the School of Arts in Rotterdam as a songwriter and singer, she wins the last season of the television show: ‘The Best Singer-Songwriter of the Netherlands’. Anna continues to play shows at Sziget Festival (HU), Songbird Festival, Pinkpop and North Sea Jazz Festival. In 2017 she tries out all the songs for her debut album ‘Residue & Lovers’ Dust' in full band formation in clubs like Paradiso, Mezz and Tivolivredenburg (Dutch Clubcircuit). Shortly after she dives into the studio for an intensive recording month with over 40 musicians under the watchful eyes and ears of producer Reyn Ouwehand. From gloomy triphop, neoclassical sprawls, smooth R&B to wispy electronic beats: the album becomes an eclectic and emotional diary that offers an insight in the tumultuous period in which Anna Rune wrote the songs. ‘Irrational pop music’ is how she described the record herself (2018). 2019, Anna takes a year off from music. ‘I had to learn how to work in a different way: with joy and inspiration as the most important goal instead of my perfectionism. I always had one foot stuck in the future. The feeling of fearless creating without compromise, a childlike enthusiasm from when we just started making stuff, is what I was after. Luckily many other creatives were inspired to join. Out of friendship, their own thirst for creative development or just simply, for fun - without a plan, expectations or time limit, it would eventually fall into place.’ During the lockdown of March 2020, she finally decides to get back into the studio with producer/drummer Mark Schilders for a weekly session of ‘playing around’. This results in 5 songs, written for people or groups of people in Anna’s life, that she has formed a monumental bond with. On the new EP, which she calls: ‘For Monumental People’, driving rhythms, analog synths and dancing bass lines demand attention. This brings Anna’s typical classical way of writing to a more contemporary space full of impulsivity.
